Spring in Greece: Get inspired for your next road trip

Spring is a magical season for travelling in Greece. Flowers are blooming, the weather is getting warmer and sunnier, days are longer and destinations are less crowded.

While the whole country is worth exploring, some places are especially beautiful in spring – either because of their natural scenery or their unique traditions.

Here are some inspiring ideas for a spring road trip in mainland Greece.

Pelion – Where Mountain meets Sea

Pelion, the summer resort of the Olympian Gods, perfectly combines mountain and sea views, traditional architecture and culture with breathtaking natural beauty.

In spring, the sea -especially on the Aegean side- is still a bit chilly, but the season is ideal for wandering through the villages’ cobblestone alleys, enjoying a Greek coffee in scenic squares under huge plane trees and hiking through lush forests and stone-built paths connecting the villages.

All this takes place in pleasant weather conditions and in a landscape full of waterfalls, spring, blooming lilacs, camellias and roses.

Makrinitsa, Tsagarada, Milies, Portaria, Vyzitsa and Mouresi are just some of Pelion’s charming villages waiting to be discovered.

Hiking the Menalon Trail in Arcadia

If you love nature and outdoor activities, the Menalon Trail in Arcadia is one of the most rewarding spring experiences in Greece.

This 75 km certified hiking trail connects nine traditional villages while passing through dense forests, rivers and impressive Byzantine monasteries.

From the first to the last kilometer, you will uncover stunning natural scenery and enjoy peaceful moments in the lively Vytina, the amphitheatrical Lagkadia, the verdant Stemnitsa, the medieval Valtesiniko, the aristocratic Dimitsana and the historic Zygovisti.

One of the highlights of the trail is Lousios River, where you can also enjoy rafting in the heart of the gorge.

Of course, you don’t have to hike the entire trail. You can explore selected sections on foot and reach the rest of the villages comfortably by car, stopping for short walks whenever a view captures your attention.

The mountains of Arcadia are simply perfect for a self-drive road trip in the Peloponnese.

Lake Kerkini – A wildlife paradise

Lake Kerkini, one of the most important wetlands in Greece, is the place to be in spring.

The lake hosts more than 300 rare bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers, nature lovers and wildlife photographers. At the same time, Mount Belles, which surrounds the lake, may still have snow on its peaks, creating a stunning contrast with the vibrant greenery of the wetlands.

Spring in Kerkini – nature and wildlife are truly at their very best.

Spring traditions in Greece: Apokries and Clean Monday

Spring in Greece is also a time of lively celebrations and centuries-old traditions.

During the three-week period before Lent, Greeks celebrate Apokries, the Greek carnival season. People wear masks and costumes, dance, sing and spend festive moments together.

Just after Apokries comes Clean Monday, which symbolizes purification and marks the beginning of the 40-day fasting period leading to Orthodox Easter.

Across Greece, this time of year is full of fascinating local customs. Here are some of the most unique ones.

The Flour War in Galaxidi (Central Greece)

One of the most colourful traditions takes place in the aristocratic seaside town of Galaxidi, very close to the archaeological site of Delphi.

The custom is called “Alevromoutzouromata” (The Flour War). During this celebration, people throw colored flour at each other in a joyful explosion of colors.

The tradition dates back to the 19th century and was originally dedicated to sailors, marking a day of celebration before they departed on long journeys at sea.

Today, thousands of visitors from all over the world participate in this unforgettable experience.

The Dionysian Ritual of Nedousa (Peloponnese)

In the village of Nedousa in Messinia, located on the slopes of Mount Taygetos near Sparta and Kalamata, a unique Dionysian ritual takes place every Clean Monday, also known as Moutzourodéftera.

The celebration begins with smearing ash on everyone’s faces, symbolizing purification, the removal of evil, and fertility.

Then a theatrical ritual unfolds with four symbolic acts:

  1. The Dance of the Goats
  2. Ploughing the Land
  3. The Wedding
  4. Death and Resurrection

With traditional costumes, ivy wreaths, goat horns, bells, local wine and food, this powerful celebration revives ancient traditions associated with fertility and the arrival of spring.

Similar Dionysian customs are also found in northern Greece.

The village of Nedousa is located very close to Mystras and Mani, making it a perfect addition to a 5-day self-guided road trip through the Messinian and Laconian Mani – a journey you should definitely not miss.

Peach blossoms in Veroia and Carnival in Naousa

Springtime in Veroia in Northern Greece creates a truly magical landscape.

The surrounding fields of peach and cherry blossoms turn the area into a dreamy setting that many visitors compare to Japan – but with a distinctly Mediterranean character.

In the nearby city of Naousa, one of Greece’s most fascinating carnival traditions takes place every year: “Genitsaroi and Boules.”

Men, dressed in elaborate traditional costumes and masks, dance through the streets performing ritual ceremonies with deep historical roots that likely date back to ancient initiation rites. Only men are allowed to participate in the ritual, preparing their costumes many months in advance, while hundreds of women and visitors gather every year to watch this impressive celebration.

Since you will be in the area, do not miss the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai in Vergina, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece.

The museum houses the royal tombs of the ancient Macedonian kings. One of them is believed to belong to Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great. In the museum, visitors can admire extraordinary treasures including golden funerary masks, jewelry, mosaics and frescoes and the famous golden larnax decorated with the sixteen-rayed Sun of Vergina

A cultural and archaeological experience that will stay with you forever.
