Τhe must-see of this road trip through the first “leg” of the Peloponnese peninsula is undoubtedly Voidokoilia Beach – one of the top beaches in Greece, which will make you wonder whether you are in the Peloponnese or the Caribbean!

Don’t miss a stop at the small seaside village of Gialova, overlooking the historic Navarino Bay, where the Battle of Navarino took place in 1827, during the Greek War of Independence. History lovers will also be captivated by Ancient Messene, one of the largest and best-preserved archaeological sites in Greece, renowned for its ancient theatre, stadium and remarkable fortification walls.

For nature lovers, Polylimnio and Neda Waterfalls offer a different side of the Peloponnese, with lush landscapes, flowing waters and natural pools, while the traditional mountain village of Andritsaina is the perfect place to relax and recharge!

Extra tip: If time allows, visit the Temple of Apollo Epicurius, built around 420-410 BC by Ictinus, the architect of the Parthenon, and Kalamata, the vibrant capital of Messenia. The history of the city dates back to Homer, who mentions Pharai, the ancient city believed to have been located near the site of today’s castle.

Methoni, Koroni & Pylos

Voidokoilia Beach & Gialova Lagoon

A beach like no other in Greece, thanks to its unique horseshoe or Omega (Ω) shape, golden sand and turquoise waters that create a truly spectacular setting. Don’t miss the Old Navarino Castle above Voidokoilia, offering panoramic views not only of the beach but also of the nearby Gialova Lagoon, known as Divari.

Divari is one of southern Greece’s most important wetlands and part of the Natura 2000 Network. Here, you may spot the rare African chameleon, found nowhere else in Europe!

Ancient Messene

One of the most impressive and best-preserved archaeological sites in Greece is waiting to be discovered. The city of Ancient Messene was founded in 369 BC by the Theban general Epaminondas following the Battle of Leuctra, which resulted in Sparta’s defeat and ended its long occupation of Messenia. Admire the spectacular ancient theatre, the stadium-gymnasium and the city’s long fortification walls, built to keep the Spartans out. A fascinating journey through history begins!

Neda River

Neda is one of the few rivers in Greece with a female name. Stretching for 32 kilometres through a lush natural landscape, it forms a series of waterfalls and natural pools, with the highest waterfall reaching 25 metres in height. A short but moderately challenging hike will lead you to this hidden paradise, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters. A magical place that feels worlds away from your everyday routine.

Andritsaina & the Temple of Apollo Epicurius

Your road trip will also take you into the region of Elis (or Ilia), where you will visit the medieval village of Andritsaina, amphitheatrically built on a lush green hillside on the western slopes of Mount Lykaion. Wander through its cobbled streets and admire its traditional stone mansions before discovering a true marvel just 15 km away: the Temple of Apollo Epicurius, one of the most important and best-preserved temples of antiquity, standing at an altitude of 1,130 metres.

It was built during the second half of the 5th century BC by Ictinus, the architect of the Parthenon, considered a masterpiece of ancient Greek architecture. It was the first monument in Greece to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in 1986.

Andromonastiro or Monastery of Transfiguration of Christ

Perhaps the most impressive Byzantine monastic complex in Messenia and one of the finest in the Peloponnese. Its architecture and fortifications, with battlements and towers, give it the appearance of a fortress. The monastery is believed to have been founded during the 12th or 13th century and is associated with Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos. After lying abandoned for almost a century, it has been beautifully restored and is now open to visitors, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich Byzantine heritage.

Polylimnio waterfalls

Apart from its numerous beaches, Messenia also offers beautiful and peaceful corners of nature, with waterfalls, small lakes and wooden bridges creating a truly idyllic setting. Get ready to discover Polylimnio, the perfect place for refreshing and relaxing moments!
