Autumn in Greece: A mythical road trip to Pelion

Thinking of a road trip to Greece this autumn? Pelion, the land of the Centaurs (mythical half-human, half-horse creatures) and, according to Greek mythology, the summer retreat of the Olympian gods, is a wonderful place to start.

Pelion is a blessed place that combines traditional mountain villages, magnificent beaches and spectacular landscapes that look especially beautiful in autumn.

Wander around the aristocratic mansions, discover Pelion’s distinctive architecture and enjoy its village squares beneath imposing plane trees. Portaria, Makrynitsa, Tsagarada, Milies, Zagora, Mouresi, Vyzitsa are just some of the villages worth exploring in the central part of the region. Relax with a book or a cup of Greek coffee in the shade of a plane tree – that’s how the pace of life slows down in Pelion!

Wine lovers can take a wine-tasting tour at a local winery, while horse lovers can enjoy a scenic ride through the forest or along the coast. For hikers, there are countless trails for different interests and experience levels. The Long Pelion Trail is a 168 km (just over 100 miles) route crossing much of the region from north to south. Choose a section based on your mood and energy levels, and hike through Pelion’s lush forests, where red and yellow leaves create a magical autumn setting.

A road trip to the southern part of Pelion is also a must. This part of the region has a different feel, with small fishing harbours and traditional Greek seafood taverns that will transport you back in time. Milinia, Agia Kiriaki and Trikeri are sure to offer some unforgettable, authentic moments.

And if the sun is shining, you might still be tempted to swim at one of the area’s many beaches. Fakistra, Mylopotamos, Plaka, Papa Nero, Damouchari cannot be missed on your list! Sandy or rocky, there’s something for every taste.
